GMIAU Newsletter                                      January 2022

This month we've been proud to join many others marching against unjust legislation, to use our voice to speak out about asylum delays and NHS charges, and to be facilitating new opportunities for young people to support one another.
Information about Afghanistan

People who were evacuated from Afghanistan in 2021, as well as many who are still there and their family members, are still waiting for clear information from the government. While the Afghan Citizens' Resettlement Scheme officially opened on the 6th January 2022, there is no formal way to apply under the scheme. The government has done nothing to make it easier for people to reunite with family members still in Afghanistan.

All4One has a new home!
 

The All4One Young Leaders Youth Group, for unaccompanied young people seeking asylum between the ages of 13 and 21, will be meeting weekly at Powerhouse in Moss Side from Wednesday February 16th. It's an opportunity to make friends, socialise, build confidence, develop leadership skills, learn about the asylum system and more.

  • Wednesdays from 4:30-8:30 pm, starting February 16th. Last entry will be 5:30pm
  • A shared meal and drinks will be provided

Delays in the asylum system

25 child and migrant rights organisations came together to send a public letter to key people involved in the safeguarding of children on their own in the UK seeking asylum.

We expressed our urgent concern about the effect years-long delays are having on the mental health of unaccompanied children seeking asylum in the UK.

Open letter to NHS trusts

Our open letter from the Greater Manchester Patients Not Passports coalition to local NHS trusts was sent at the beginning of January. It calls for an end to NHS charges for migrants and to ensure healthcare is accessible for all.

Thank you to everyone who signed our letter - over 30 organisations and over 200 concerned individuals calling for healthcare justice in our city-region.

On Saturday 15th, we joined the National Day of Action to stand up against the Nationality and Borders Bill and the Policing Bill, both of which are currently moving through Parliament.
